destination botswana
Botswana is indeed one of Africa’s most remarkable destinations for wildlife and conservation. It is the country with the highest concentration of Elephants left on Earth, the biggest African Wild Dog population and one of only 9 viable Lion populations on the continent. Indeed, we live in an age of extinction, quite sadly brought on by us. Botswana protects over 35% of its territory through a system of National Parks, Game Reserves, forest reserves and private concessions set aside for wildlife.
Botswana also allows and supports a large network of researchers and conservation based NGO’s who conduct their studies with a view to furthering our knowledge of eco-systems and species.
Earth Ark Safaris conducts wildlife photographic safaris to most destinations in Botswana. We also provide support for researchers in the country by supplying equipment and vehicles to them. Our safaris are fun and educational and we spend most our time on safaris observing and recording Africa’s unique wildlife.

Okavango Delta’s Khwai River: Mobile Camp (3 nights)
The Khwai River is the eastern most extremity of the 18000 km2 Okavango Delta. The Okavango itself is a large alluvial fan spreading out over the Kalahari sands. It is the single largest intact eco system in Southern Africa and recently was awarded the World’s one-thousandth World Heritage site.
Khwai River is noted as an extremely game rich destination plenty of predator action. Here, Leopards are frequently sighted as well as excellent opportunities to see African Wild Dog packs denning and hunting. There are many bull Elephants in the area, large pods of Hippopotamus, aquatic antelope like Red Lechwe and Water Buck and good populations of Giraffe and Zebra. As the area is on the edge of the Delta, bird life is abundant especially aquatic birds and raptors.

Chobe National Park – Savute: Mobile Camp (3 nights)
Savute lies in the heart of the 11600 km2 Chobe National Park. A system of small hills and a dry river bed, Savute provides stunning backdrops for photographers. In some years, the Savute Channel with its source in Linyanti, has been known to flow. The water finishes in an open area called the Savute Marsh. Savute is well known for predators, especially Lions. There are two frequently seen prides known as the Marsh pride and hill pride respectively. Leopard and African Wild Dogs are frequently seen here and from time to time Cheetah. Bird life is abundant and the area is good for the likes of Ostrich and Kori Bustards as well as excellent Raptor sightings. The area is also noted for big bull Elephants around water holes.

Chobe National Park – Chobe River: Mobile Camp (4 nights)
The Chobe River forms the International border with Namibia and drains into the Zambezi River. It is here that one finds the greatest concentration of African Elephants on Earth. It is the greatest destination to spend time with Elephants but the river itself supports an abundance of wildlife. Large herds of African Buffalo, Plain’s Zebra, Giraffe, Impala and Kudu are frequently sighted. The sheer numbers of birdlife is extraordinary as well large numbers of Nile crocodile.
Huge pods of Hippopotamus occupy the river system and it is here that we do a boat cruise to get up close to them.

preparing for your safari
“If you visit only two continents in your life, visit Africa twice…”
Preparation Guide
So, you’ve filled out your registration form and now you’re ready to start planning what to bring.
For anyone travelling to Africa, preparation is the key. Knowing what to bring and what to leave behind is essential when travelling through the great African bush.
If you’ve been before you’ll know, but for those visiting for the first time this guide will provide you with all the “must haves”.
Pack in your hand luggage so you don’t lose them…
OK, so now you’re ready to come to Africa although there are a few more must haves, as long as you have the top 3 you’ll be set on your way!
VISA
You require a visa to enter Botswana. Upon arrival you will be issued with a tourist visa with a maximum of 90 days per annum. This will cost USD30.00 per person. If you are travelling to Zimbabwe or Zambia after your time with us, you will need to pay for a visa at the Kazangula border crossing. This is around USD40.00. We advise that you have exact cash for both of these as there is no change available.
HEALTH
We carry basic first aid kits in all our vehicles and our guides are trained but we can’t carry everything. If you have any medications you know you will need while with us bring enough for the duration and pack in your day sack for safe keeping. If you have any changes to your health prior to your arrival, please let us know.
For inoculations, please contact your GP or health provider.
CLOTHING
Neutral earth tone clothing is a must. By sticking to the color palette of khaki, stone, olive, grey, etc. you won’t stand out. Camouflage clothing is, on the other hand, not permitted. Make sure they are lightweight and preferably cotton so your body can breathe.
Also a good pair of walking shoes is essential along with a pair of sandals. Both should have a sturdy sole, as the thorns here can be quite impressive.
THE WEATHER
Here in Botswana we have no problems when it comes to sunny days but the sun can be harsh. At some point on your drive you will be in the “sunny seat” so remember to pack nuclear strength sunscreen, a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses.
Also long sleeved shirts and a thin shawl can help protect your skin from the mid day sun.
Winter Safari Wardrobe:Heavy cotton shirts and a fleece, wind breaker, gloves, fleece hat that covers your ears and a shawl to stop that cool breeze down the back of your fleece. This may sound like over kill for an African adventure but trust us, you’ll be happy we told you.
But don’t forget the shorts and t-shirts. Not only are they good as extra layers when you leave camp first thing, you’ll feel the benefit at lunchtime.
WATER
We provide filtered drinking water on your journey with us. It is important to drink enough water while you travel and during the summer months we recommend bringing rehydration salts. This keeps your minerals topped up and helps prevent dehydration.
FOOD and DRINK
All food is prepared and cooked in the camp by our Chef. If you have any dietary requirements or foods you don’t like at all, please let us know. Some foods are difficult to get hold of here but we can try our best to help make your culinary experience enjoyable.
We also provide snacks for your journey exploring the bush as well as packed lunches on the days you don’t return to camp (ie: moving days)
Wine, gin, local beer and soft drinks can be provided to add to your enjoyment of your trip especially as you watch sunset. (sun-downer)
Water, tea and coffee are available all day both in camp and during your game drive.

- Head torch/flashlight: This is a must for the bush. The beauty of travelling through the wilderness of the African continent is that the light you see at night is only from the stars and moon or the campfire. But be sure to invest in a decent one. You don’t want it breaking half way through your journey. (and remember to pack extra batteries)
- Binoculars:These are the second most important piece of equipment and again, invest! Don’t leave home without them!
- A Digital Camera:Keeping a record on our journey through one of the last remaining wildernesses in Africa is important. There is a variety of equipment available and the following are some guidelines to enhance your photographic experience.

CAMP
Camping in the great outdoors is a truly an amazing experience but it does come with a few risks. We, in Botswana, are very lucky to have animals roam free over the country with over 33% of Botswana’s landscape dedicated to wildlife and staying in these wild places is privilege. Due to this we recommend you are extremely vigilant during your time in camp. You never know who will come to visit. Nigh time is particularly important, as our eyesight is not as well adapted to twilight as our furry friends.
The camp will consist of a dining tent, your tents with bedrolls with toilet and bucket shower.
(If you’re wondering what a bucket shower is… it’s a suspended canvas water bag with a shower rose. It takes a little technique but you’ll soon get the hang of it.)
LUGGAGE
Flights to and from Johannesburg to Botswana have a luggage weight restriction of 20kg. A Duffel/ soft bag is highly recommended as they pack easier into the vehicle. (although pack all fragile items in your day pack)
Hard cases are not wise and wheelie cases are impractical in thick sand.
VEHICLE
For your journey through Botswana you will be driven in what we call a “Safari Limo” which is a Land Cruiser game viewer. These are specially adapted vehicles where a frame that sits on the car with bucket seats to give you maximum space and view of the landscapes and wildlife you’ll encounter. These can be tricky to climb in and out of but you’ll soon have your own technique and will be a pro by the end of your trip. If you suffer from back problems or have any mobility issues, please let us know in your form so we can help.
ELECTRONICS
IPads, IPods, Kindles, Laptops, Digital Cameras…. Our lives are dominated by electronics. As you can imagine travelling to remote parts of Botswana wilderness makes electricity hard to come by. But have no fear…. We can charge your batteries using our Inverters. These are 220V inverters that are hooked up to the car for all your charging needs.
(Please double check your equipment works at 220V. Some require 110/120V)
Also remember to grab an M-type South African plug adapter just in case. These have 3 round prongs.
